James Oren Smith
James Oren Smith (Conamo) died peacefully Feb. 28, 2026.
Jim was exceptionally bright, wonderfully inquisitive and broadly read. He was an inventive, brilliant engineer with broad interests not only in science but also in economics, history, politics, current events and other areas.
He was loyal to his friends and always eager to have a conversation, or debate, across his many fields of interest.
Jim was the first child of Ellen Ruth Newell Smith and Lloyd Heaston Smith, born at home June 19, 1941, on their farm outside Sherrodsville.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth, and brother, Ernest.
He is survived by his brother, Lanty; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
After graduating from Conotton Valley High School, he earned a scholarship and his degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio State University. Through the years, he took classes to stay abreast of technological advances, consistently upgrading his knowledge and skills.
He worked in the engineering profession for many years, always seeking opportunities to apply his creativity.
Jim’s family expresses deep appreciation to the staff at Wayne County Care Center for their compassion and excellent care.
