Don Myers

Donald Eugene Myers was born April 28, 1930, in Canton, Ohio, and passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026.

A lifelong resident of Ohio, Don lived most of his life in Lake Township. He grew up on a farm in Hartville and graduated from Greentown High School in 1948, and Otterbein College in 1952. He served in Korea (U.S. Army, 1952-54) then was a public-school teacher for 16 years. In 1960, he founded Don Myers Driving School, which he owned and operated for 35 years. An avid sportsman and conservationist, he showed furs and gave talks on varieties of buckeye trees at the Stark County Fair for many years. He always had a buckeye in his pocket to hand out, and he never met a stranger. Don competed at the national level with the United States Canoe Association and participated in re-enactments as a French Voyager with the Ohio Historical Canoe Route Association. He won medals in the National Senior Olympics, pole vaulting into his 8th decade of life. Every summer, he devoted his time to gardening; at his peak, he cultivated, harvested, and sold tomatoes from 10,000 plants at his roadside stand and at local farmers’ markets. He also loved making and selling hand-crafted wooden toys.

Public service and patriotism ran in Don's veins, having been deputized as Township Clerk at age 21 while his clerk-father was unavailable, and in the dining room of their family home, Don signed the documents for Hartville to become a village in 1951. In 1997, he was elected as a Lake Township Trustee and served for 8 years. He was also a founding member and President Emeritus of the Lake Township Historical Society, and he taught about local history at every opportunity.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, William and Catherine (Darst) Myers and his brother, Robert Myers. He is survived by his wife, Mary Anna (Wagner) Myers; his sister, Martha Myers; his daughters: Ruth (Dale) Zimmerman, Cathy (Peter) Hahn, Bethia (Jim) Herbruck, and Donna (Garry) Hall; 12 grandchildren “The Dozen”: Brian (Julie) Zimmerman, Tim (Ashley) Zimmerman, Tami (Tyler) Mumford, Anna (Josh) Fickle, Ben (Michelle) Hahn, Paul (Ashley) Hahn, Mark (Emily) Hahn, Derek (Lauren) Herbruck, Kyle (Kelly) Herbruck, Lyndsay (Nick) Pearson, Dakota (Annamarie) Noble, and Dakayla (Will) Rasper; 23 great-grandchildren; nephews: Randy (Sooz) Myers, Rick (Jane) Myers, and Larry (Sylvia) Myers; and many other siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, and greats.

In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that you nurture a tomato plant at your home this summer. Also, consider visiting The Greentown Museum, which Don helped to establish. Donations can be made in his memory to the Lake Township Historical Society.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, April 9 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, April 10 at 9:00 a.m. with a Celebration of Life to follow at 10:00 a.m., all at Evermore Community Church. Interment will be at St. Jacob's Cemetery.

The Myers family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Aultman Hospital, Woodlawn Compassionate Care Center, and Arnold Funeral Home for their exceptional end-of-life care.
