Garden club visits Terra Depot nursery
The nursery specializes in native perennials and trees for insects and birds
Members of the Mohawk Trail Garden Club traveled to Terra Depot nursery in Navarre April 21.
Owner Megan Shoenfelt gave a presentation titled “Making the connection: Creating healthy and happy habitats for songbirds.” Her nursery specializes in native perennials and trees for insects and birds.
She presented photos of birds and discussed what they like to eat and their habitats. The birds included finches, woodpeckers, Baltimore orioles, tufted titmice, blue jays, hummingbirds and bluebirds.
Shoenfelt advised club members to plant native plants, such as bee balm and coneflowers, to attract butterflies and bees, which are essential for pollination. She also suggested leaving some leaves and stems from flowers, such as coneflowers, in the yard in the fall to provide habitats and food for insects and birds. Shoenfelt said garden and yard cleanup should be finished from late March to early April instead.
Garden club members then shopped in the gift shop, where bird food, garden decorations and other items were displayed.
The Mohawk Trail Garden Club welcomes new members interested in horticulture, gardening, birds, conservation and lasting friendships. For more information, contact Carol Davidson at 330-863-2860 or Marty Reed at 330-863-0730.
