A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Jim lived a life defined by curiosity, kindness and quiet service. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jim graduated from Walsh College with a degree in education and went on to follow a varied career path. He taught middle school English — fondly remembered by students for the “Helping Verb Song” — and at one point operated a one-screen movie theater in Carrollton. For 23 years, he supported families during their most difficult moments as a large-loss claims adjuster specializing in disaster relief. He also was a member of the local arson task force.
Jim was a longtime member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, where he cared for Sherrodsville Cemetery, brought Communion to the sick and helped with community dinners in the parish hall. In retirement, he continued his commitment to service by volunteering with hospice and later serving as a board member.
He took great pride in tending a thriving garden and often cycled 10 to 60 miles a day. His interests included cooking, writing, painting, photography, building custom bicycles and visiting museums, especially those featuring his favorite artist, Salvador Dalí. Above all, Jim was a teacher at heart, eager to share what he had learned with anyone willing to listen.
Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary, whom he lovingly called Rosemary; his daughters, Amy Spears and Jennifer Goings; sons-in-law Phil Spears and Eric DeCaria; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held in Carrollton this summer. Details will be announced at a later date.
