Coshocton Chamber leader reflects on home
In a June column, Amy Crown ties graduation season and Father’s Day to supporting local businesses in Coshocton County
As graduation season fills our community with celebration, excitement and anticipation for the future, I cannot help but reflect on my own graduation from Coshocton High School many years ago. I remember sitting in those seats feeling like the world was waiting for me beyond the borders of our small town. I could not wait to head to the Ohio State University and experience everything Coshocton “didn’t” have to offer.
Like many graduates, I was eager for something bigger, faster and different.
Fast forward all these years later, after having opportunities to move away from our town — and even out of state — for career opportunities and I find myself reflecting on just how special small-town living truly is. What once felt “small” now feels connected. What once felt “quiet” now feels comforting. And what once felt limiting now feels like home.
There is something incredibly valuable about walking into a store and knowing the people around you. There is comfort in having trusted people on speed dial for whatever life throws your way — whether it is needing help at home, assistance at work or simply knowing someone who can point you in the right direction. In Coshocton County we take care of one another.
I often joke that the chamber serves as the community’s 211, 411 and sometimes even 911 — helping connect people to businesses, services, resources, events and solutions every single day. And honestly, we would not want it any other way.
One of the greatest joys is now watching today’s graduates experience that same excitement for the future. We celebrate those heading off to new adventures, colleges, careers and opportunities. But there also is something incredibly special about seeing many of them return home someday — bringing new ideas, new energy and new appreciation for the community that helped shape them.
Coshocton may not have everything a large city offers, but it offers something many larger places cannot: connection, community, convenience and people who genuinely care.
And speaking of people who care, June also gives us the opportunity to celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, coaches and father figures who make a difference in our lives every day. As Father’s Day approaches, I encourage everyone to shop local when searching for the perfect gift, planning dinner or celebrating with family. Our local businesses work hard to provide unique products, great service and experiences that keep our community thriving.
When you shop local, you are not just purchasing a gift — you are investing in your neighbors, supporting local families and helping keep Coshocton strong for future generations.
From graduation celebrations to Father’s Day gatherings, thank you for continuing to support the businesses, organizations and people that make Coshocton County such a wonderful place to call home.
Wishing everyone a safe, joyful and memorable June!
