Betty Salvage

Here on earth, we sadly say goodbye to Betty Whyde Salvage, aged 99, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt to many generations, good neighbor and friend to many, and a true and devout Christian. She was a prodigious creator of prayer shawls, baby blankets, and afghans that have given comfort to many hundreds of people in Coshocton and beyond. She worked as a glove turner at Edmont’s for over 20 years. Betty was the last of her generation in our families, and we will truly miss her and visiting with her at her home on Vine Street.

Betty weathered life’s hardships and tragedies through her faith in God and a survivor’s spirit. One of seven sisters, she was born and raised in Frazeysburg during the Great Depression in a family that had little material resources, yet she always said they were happy and always provided for. Spending summer days in Frazeysburg at our grandparents was always a delight for her children, nieces, and nephews. Betty came of age during WWII and demonstrated the resilience, resourcefulness, and silent strength of that generation. It is hard to imagine a world without her.

We do joyfully release her now to all those in heaven who preceded her: her daughter and son, Barbara and Tim; her parents, Jay and Gladys Whyde; her four adult and two infant sisters, and two dear brothers-in-law; her former husband, Harry, with whom she shared a true friendship; grandson, Thomas; nieces and nephews; and many friends. They will all be happy to welcome her home.

A life-long Presbyterian, Betty would be very grateful for any memorial contributions made to the Presbyterian Church of Coshocton. We offer our heartfelt thanks to those who cared for Betty in her last months, including her niece, Dr. Stephanie Richcreek and her longtime physician, Dr. Douglas Virostko; nephew, John Addy; neighbor, DeeDee Bryan; all those with Shrivers Hospice, and the staff at Coshocton Regional Medical Center and EMS, who provided compassionate care for her on multiple visits.

Rest in peace, Betty, after a long and well-lived life.
