Donald W. Torgler
Don has dropped his remote for the last time. Donald W. Torgler, 95, passed away February 8, 2026, at Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare after a two-week illness. He had a wonderful life and had continued to be healthy and active, making countless friends along the way. He will be remembered for the twinkle in his eye and his warm personality.
He was born at home on October 25, 1930, in Canton, Ohio to Albert and Alice (Mohr) Torgler. His family moved to Mt. Eaton in 1933, where he enjoyed an idyllic childhood. Don graduated from Paint Township High School in 1948, in a class of eight students who remained close friends all their lives.
After being drafted in the U.S. Army and serving in Germany, Don attended Wooster Business College. He moved to Dalton in 1960, raising his family and participating in the interests of his children. He was employed at Republic Steel in Massillon in data processing and retired in 1985 after thirty years. He had been an active member of the Dalton United Methodist Church.
Don loved the camaraderie and competition of sports. In the 1970s, he was a regular at Hall of Fame Fitness Center in Canton, playing in their Volvo League tennis team. He enjoyed bicycling on the trail near his home, and became an avid golfer, playing any chance he got. Before moving to Wooster in 2020 to live with his daughter and son-in-law, he played euchre three times a week. Getting trumped was no big deal. His motto was that you can’t win unless you take chances. Whatever the challenge, Don was surrounded by great friends. He was a joy to be around and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Paul (Dorothy) Torgler, and sister Janet (Darrell) Lax. He is survived by his four children, Kim J. Torgler, Orrville, Rand W. (Ann) Torgler, Orrville, Dawn M. (Greg) Yukie, Akron, and Vicki T. (Joe) Slater, Wooster. His three grandchildren include Matt (Chelsea) Torgler, Loudonville, Callie (Isaac) Ressler, Columbus, Ben (Brianna) Torgler, Massillon, and seven great grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews. Honorary family is Gwen (Fisher) Glew, MD, MPH of Haverford, Penn. He was proud of them all.
Arrangements are under the direction of Spidell Funeral Home of Mt. Eaton where services were held Thursday, February 12. Calling hours began at 1:00 p.m. with a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. to celebrate a life well lived. Burial was beside his mom and dad at Westlawn Cemetery in Mt. Eaton.
Remembrances may be sent to Vicki at dont.euchre@gmail.com. Online condolences may be posted at spidellfuneralhomemounteaton.com. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation to Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, Oh 44691, or Rails to Trails of Wayne County, P.O. Box 1566, Wooster, Oh 44691.
I loved him more than anyone, but I shared him with all of you.
