CHS seniors built an unusual class project 60 years ago

60 YEARS AGO

From 1966 FPS Files

Three Carrollton High School senior boys — Kenneth Grigsby, John Eisenhut and Robert Magee, assisted by their physics instructor, John A. Miller — constructed a Van de Graaff generator, a device used to build up a high electrical charge.

Filling Carroll County’s 193rd induction call into the Armed Services were John P. Long, Larry R. Campbell, Russell C. Garner, Eugene R. Sell, Ronald W. Ebner, Carl L. Andrews, George E. Walton, James P. Snair, Richard M. Lambert, Larry D. Harris and Alan W. Patterson.

The resignation of Police Officer Thomas Miller was accepted by Carrollton Village Council.

Milli Kempthorne, a Carrollton High School senior, was crowned queen of the junior-senior prom.

During the past baseball season, two Carrollton High School pitchers, Larry Vahalik and Jeff Trautman, hurled no-hitters, according to Coach Richard Manfull.

50 YEARS AGO

Michael Fawcett and Diane K. King were named valedictorian and salutatorian at Carrollton High School, and Jan Michel was crowned prom queen.

Chuck Lutton was installed as president of the Carrollton Jaycees.

Tom Mesler was elected president of the Carroll County Firemen’s Association.

Larry Wood was pictured clearing one of the hurdles in the 180-yard low hurdles event held at the Bellaire sectionals.

40 YEARS AGO

Carroll County Agriculture Extension Agent Roger L. Amos announced his resignation effective July 31 to accept a similar position in Ashland County.

Earl Vandegrift was honored by the four service clubs of Minerva as Man of the Year.

Mrs. Clara Scott was crowned Mother of the Year at Leavittsville.

Carrollton scored three runs on six walks and a sacrifice fly by Scott DeChiara in their second game against Tusky Valley, which led to the Senate League Southern Division baseball title.

30 YEARS AGO

From 1996 FPS Files

Carrollton’s five-member bus driver team took first place among 10 teams at the state School Bus Driver Road-e-o in Columbus. Members included Linda Derby, who placed second among 90 individuals, Glenn Rossey, Vicki King, Rhonda Baker and Jeannie Irwin.

Frank Evanosky of Bergholz, a German prisoner of war, was the subject of a feature story in the May 23, 1996, issue of The FPS.

Carrollton’s Louis Ritchie handled the pitching duties for the Warriors against Edison Local in sectional tournament action at Steubenville that Edison won 4-3.

Miss Tammy Sanderson took over the duties as the new secretary of the Carroll County Agricultural Society (Fair Board), succeeding Robert Bland.

Donna Tucker was installed as president of the Carroll County Democrat Women’s Club.

Clayton Burks and Sarah Husted were named valedictorian and salutatorian of the 2006 Carrollton High School senior class.

The Sandy Valley Lady Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and made their stand for a 3-1 victory over Steubenville Central Catholic to win the Division III district championship.

10 YEARS AGO

Marine veteran Charles “Chuck” Pearson was named the guest speaker at Carrollton’s Memorial Day service, and Carroll County Municipal Court Judge Gary Willen was scheduled to speak at Malvern’s Memorial Day events.

Carrollton’s first-year athlete Dakota Jenrett earned a bid to the regional contest by winning the long jump with a jump of 20-11 and placing third in the high jump with a jump of 5-10.
