Buckeye Career Center has named its May students of the month.

Two high school students were chosen for demonstrating May’s core value of innovation/adaptability. An adult education student also was selected.

Sophie McMasters

The first high school winner is Medical Assisting senior Sophie McMasters. McMasters attends BCC from New Philadelphia and is employed at Park Village Healthcare in Dover. She was nominated by her chemistry teacher, Robin Benedict.

“She works hard in her classes and truly cares about her grades and doing well in school, while also working full-time hours at a nursing home,” Benedict said.

After graduation, McMasters plans to move to Lima to continue her health care journey by enrolling in EMT school. She is the daughter of Kori and Tristen Lambert.

The second high school winner is Business and Marketing senior Angus Toalston. Toalston attends BCC from Carrollton and is a member of Business Professionals of America. His math instructor, Alisha Numbers, nominated him for the honor.

“Angus works independently and has never missed an assignment. He uses critical thinking skills and is gifted in math,” Numbers said.

After graduation, Toalston plans to attend college to become a certified public accountant. He is the son of Laura and Richard Toalston.

The May Adult Education Student of the Month is Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration student Shamealle Wicker. Wicker previously attended Mid-East Career and Technology Centers and is self-employed.

Wicker enrolled in the program to further her technical skills and knowledge and hopes to take BCC’s adult education plumbing and electrical programs while earning more certifications.

Wicker’s instructor, Josh Feister, nominated her for the honor.

“Shamealle is extremely hardworking and very determined to advance. She works well with others and is always positive,” Feister said.

Wicker lives in New Philadelphia with her wife, Kristin, and two children.
