Quakers dominate Tuscarawas County Classic
The Quakers dominated the boys standings with 161 points, well ahead of Dover with 85 and Indian Valley with 75
New Philadelphia showcased the county’s strongest track and field program May 7 at the annual Tuscarawas County Classic at Woody Hayes Stadium, winning nearly one-third of the meet’s events.
Although no team champion was crowned, the Quakers dominated the boys standings with 161 points, well ahead of Dover with 85 and Indian Valley with 75. New Philadelphia also edged Dover for the girls lead, 93-91, while Tusky Valley placed third with 85.
New Philadelphia won nine individual events and two relays. Senior Caleb Carlisle led the way with victories in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and also ran on the winning 4x200 relay team with classmates Eric Harris, Cade Jones and Myles Tyson.
Senior Marcus Adelman captured the 1600-meter run, finishing just ahead of teammate Wyatt Lendon. Adelman also ran on the winning 4x400 relay team with Carter Watson, Kyle Beaber and Lendon. Senior Alec Adelman won the 3200, while junior Jaxson Rice claimed the high jump and matched the meet record at 6 feet, 8 inches after narrowly missing attempts at 6-10.
For the Quaker girls, senior Amya Price won the 100 hurdles, junior Kyle Smith took first in the 3200, freshman Khloe Sours won the high jump and junior Maricel Alcantra Rodriguez captured the discus.
Tusky Valley recorded seven first-place finishes. Senior Savannah Ashton won the 100 and 200, while the girls 4x400 relay team of Sami Ward, Hayden Huffman, Josie Eick and Natalie Rennicker placed first. Ward, Huffman, Eick and Trista Lieser also won the 4x800 relay.
For the Tusky Valley boys, junior Jake McDermott won the discus, junior Cade Conrad captured the 800 and the 4x800 relay team of Blake Markle, Micah Rippel, Mason Tidrick and Sam Uvena took first.
Dover’s Emmy Rodriguez won the girls long jump and freshman Maddie Minnis placed first in the shot put and second in the discus. Caden Cleveland won the discus for the Tornado boys.
Newcomerstown junior Solee Garland earned three gold medals, winning the 300 hurdles and helping the Trojans capture the 4x100 and 4x200 relays alongside Cameron Kuder, Samantha Kuder and Avilyn Hoover. Senior Trenton Wright added a victory in the 400.
Indian Valley junior Carsen Hostetler won both hurdle races and also ran on the winning 4x200 relay team with Grady Kinsey, Logan Burrier and Reese St. Clair.
Strasburg-Franklin freshman Lydia Thomas dominated the 400-meter dash, winning by nearly five seconds, and also placed second in the long jump.
Claymont senior Kali Wallace won the 1600-meter run, while Tuscarawas Central Catholic senior Elena Price won the 800 and junior Nolan Pugh captured the pole vault.
Garaway had two winners with freshman Micah Yoder taking the long jump and junior Abby Steiner winning the pole vault.
Sandy Valley did not compete in the nine-school meet.
