Robert J. Bird, 86, passed peacefully into eternity on Dec. 7, 2025, with his family at his side.

Born at home on Oct. 27, 1939, in Darlington, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Richard R. and Marcella E. (Mahon) Bird.

Bob graduated from East Palestine High School in Ohio and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in education from Bowling Green University. A gifted athlete, he excelled in football throughout high school and continued as a standout tackle for Bowling Green, even reaching the final draft stage with the Houston Oilers.

On Aug. 4, 1962, Bob married his high school sweetheart, with whom he shared 49 years of devoted marriage until her passing in 2011. He is also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Jeanne Bird. He is survived by his daughter, Julie Loos (Jeffrey); his grandsons, Matthew and Tyler Cairns, who were the greatest pride and joy of his life; and his faithful canine companion, Timmy.

Bob dedicated 36 years to Carrollton High School as a teacher, coach and athletic director, shaping students with lessons in hard work, discipline and respect. After retiring from education, he continued his life of service at the Salvation Army’s Camp NEOSA, working as caretaker and maintenance for 18½ years before retiring fully at almost 80 years old.

A member of the Dellroy Ruritans since 1993, Bob served many years as treasurer and took great pride in contributing to the community he loved. Of all his accomplishments, his greatest was his family. He exemplified selfless devotion, loving them through quiet acts of service and a subtle sense of humor that brought them joy and amusement throughout the years. He had a gift for caring for others’ needs before they even realized them themselves.

Family and friends were invited to honor his life on Thursday, Dec. 11, from 11 a.m. to noon for visitation, followed by a service officiated by Pastor Scott Welch at Dellroy Christ Community Church, where Bob was a longtime member.

Burial followed at Baxter’s Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dellroy Ruritans to continue Bob’s legacy of community service.
