The typical intake would be a cat or dog being surrendered by the owner, often due to circumstances beyond their control, such as relocation or illness. These animals are domesticated and more likely to be fostered or adopted. The shelter also will accept some strays that are friendly.

People wanting to surrender animals to the CCAPL must call ahead for an appointment at 330-476-6234. Animals should be leashed or in cages or carriers. The shelter will have some leashes and carriers available on-site. Information about surrendering animals is available at carrollcountyapl.com.

The CCAPL will not accept feral animals or animals that have serious medical issues or display aggressive tendencies. It will assist people with finding resources to care for these animals. It also will pay $35 toward spaying or neutering for a stray or owned cat for Carroll County residents. These services are performed at AlterClinic in Canton. See alterclinicac.com for details.

One of the best programs for dealing with feral cat populations is Trap, Neuter, Return. Cats are humanely trapped and taken to a veterinarian for neutering and other necessary care. Their ears are tipped so trappers can identify cats that have already been neutered. They are returned to their original location, which prevents other feral cats from moving into that space and further increasing the cat population. Thanks for the Tip TNR will host an information table at the CCAPL grand opening from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 30.
