Library to host award-winning wildlife author, photographer
David FitzSimmons to present Curious Critters program May 27
Award-winning photographer and author David FitzSimmons will visit the Carroll County District Library later this month for a presentation focused on wildlife photography, storytelling and nature education.
FitzSimmons will present Curious Critters at 6 p.m. May 27 at the library, 70 Second St. NE, Carrollton. The free public program will include a discussion of his animal photography series, behind-the-scenes stories from his work and a question-and-answer session followed by a book signing.
Known for his close-up wildlife portraits and educational children’s books, FitzSimmons has written more than 20 books that have sold more than 200,000 copies nationwide. His works have received numerous national awards, including honors from the Independent Book Publishers Association for best first picture book and best picture book.
His “Curious Critters” series includes books focused on birds, marine life and wildlife from states across the country, including Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. Other titles include “Animals of Ohio’s Ponds and Vernal Pools,” “Salamander Dance” and “Wakem the Rooster: Up All Night.”
In addition to his photography and writing career, FitzSimmons taught for more than 20 years as a high school English teacher and university professor, including positions at Ashland University, Ohio State University and Cornell University. He holds a doctorate in English from Ohio State University with a specialty in narrative theory.
FitzSimmons regularly visits schools and community organizations to promote nature education, photography and literacy, particularly encouraging children to connect with the natural world through reading and observation.
His photography has been exhibited at venues including the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, the National Center for Nature Photography and the Telluride Photo Festival.
The May 27 program is open to all ages. Books will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.
