Carrollton Garden Club discusses projects, beautification efforts
Members hear floral presentation, plan summer activities and community improvements
Members of the Carrollton Garden Club held their May meeting at Pleasant Grove Church gazebo, where they enjoyed a picnic luncheon and presentation by Beth Zbasnik.
Zbasnik discussed the historical features of the gazebo, including antique wavy glass windows and stained-glass decorative window panels from the original church. She also noted Carrollton Garden Club members met at the location in the early 2000s and planted 600 daffodil bulbs donated by the late member Sonny Swartz.
Members assisting with the planting included Shirley Campbell, Ruth Ann Capper, Dee Grimm, Mary Huffman, Linda Klein, Nellie Nye and Ann Saltsman.
Zbasnik later shared a floral-themed presentation discussing flowers and plants mentioned in the Bible. She told members there are more than 30,000 plants and flowers referenced in biblical writings and highlighted categories including purity, hope and healing, provision and sustenance, beauty and celebration, and brevity of life, along with related scripture readings.
During the business meeting, Heidi Lafferty reported the club received a $500 donation from the village of Carrollton for community beautification efforts.
The club also voted to share in the purchase of a tree for Fifth Street Park with the Suburban Garden Club.
Members will operate the hot dog stand at Sanders Market June 5-7. Proceeds will be used to purchase flowers for planting at the square, McCook House, post office and Friendship Center.
Club members planted flowers May 15 at the square and McCook House area. All flowers were purchased from local greenhouses.
Members will also gather with residents of the Golden Age Retreat in June to create floral arrangements for the facility.
Garden clubs are being invited to decorate interior doors at the McCook House in a patriotic theme competition. A $50 prize will be awarded to the club receiving the most votes. Entry deadline is June 14, and doors may be decorated June 25-27. Contact the McCook House for additional information.
