Graduation exercises were held at the Carroll County Fairgrounds for the 212 seniors in Carrollton High School’s graduating class.

Patricia Artzner, a senior, was crowned queen of St. Edward High School’s first junior-senior prom.

Construction was underway for a new addition at Wesleyan Methodist Church in Sherrodsville.

Filling Carroll County’s 194th induction call into the armed services were Harold L. Lucas, Wayne T. Woodruff, Terry Joe Locke and Duane E. Householder.

The old school bell that summoned children to school in the late 1800s was mounted on a concrete foundation at the main entrance to Carrollton High School on Third Street NE.

Two Carrollton High School students — Edwin Jones and Timothy Eick — earned top state honors in the Ohio Department of Education’s Ohio Tests of Scholastic Achievement.

Charles Reed was installed as president of the Malvern Jaycees.

Malvern’s baseball team finished 17-7 to set a new school record under Coach Ryan Shafer.

40 YEARS AGO

Four balloonists — Dee Hortsman, Betty Shaver, Sand Busler and Dorothy Horrigan — were featured in a front-page photo in the May 29, 1986, issue of The FPS before taking off on a hot-air balloon ride.

Susie, an English sparrow, was the subject of a feature story about feathering her nest with a Carrollton couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ferrell Perrine.

Mike Hamilton’s time of 4:31.9 in the 1,600-meter race at the Class AA district meet at Steubenville broke Carrollton’s school record of 4:45.

Carroll County Victim Assistance Program Director Karin Taff received the Outstanding Victims’ Services Practitioner Award from Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer.

Speakers for Carrollton High School’s 1996 commencement exercises included four valedictorians — Alexis Johnston, Lori Maiorca, Jasmine Peterson and Emily Winters — along with salutatorian Susan Kampfer.

Carrollton High School’s four valedictorians who gave speeches at the 2006 graduation ceremonies included Clayton Burks, Sarah Husted, Anthony Silecchia and Kaitlyn Stoneman.

Lt. Col. William A. Mannecke, a retired United States Air Force veteran and native of Malvern, provided the Memorial Day address at Bethlehem Cemetery.

Carrollton’s Ethan Naylor was the youngest member of the Warriors relay team heading to Columbus to participate in the 1,600-meter relay race.

Charles “Chuck” Pearson, a retired Marine, and Carroll County Municipal Court Judge Gary Willen were the guest speakers at Memorial Day observances held in Carrollton and Malvern.

The new Welcome Center at Atwood Lake marked the beginning of $120 million in improvements at the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District.

The Lady Warriors track team finished first with 121 points for its first district title since 1983 and fourth in school history, advancing to regional competition in 12 events.
