Richard Ott

Richard J. Ott, 83, of Amsterdam, passed away Thursday, Dec. 11, 2025.

He was born June 18, 1942, in Canton, a son of the late Richard and Dorothy (Smith) Ott.

Richard retired as a bricklayer from Republic Steel in Canton. He was a huge lover of animals and enjoyed spending winters in Florida. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and bingo player, and he enjoyed riding around and visiting friends at the campgrounds, where he was widely known as “Papa Ott.” He loved spending time with family and friends.

Richard was very loved and will be forever missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie (Slagle) Ott; son, Dennis Ott; brothers Sheldon Smith, Verle Ott and Oscar Ott; and sisters Verna Miller, Twila McCormick, Mary Lou Huscusson, Jackie Kelly and Dorothy Gruich.

He is survived by two daughters, Robin Ott and Laurie Ott; three sons, Richard (Betty) Ott, Jerry (Christi Allen) Ott and Scott (Carrie) Ott; six sisters, Geri (Randy) Bowser, Darlene (Marty) Morris, Penny Freeman, Lucky Johnston, Jean Hamilton and Lana Waggoner; and one brother, Frank (Reatha) Ott; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Carrollton Eagles, 1072 Brenner Rd. NE, Carrollton, OH 44615.

The Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia is in charge of arrangements.
