Harriet Jones

Harriet Ann Jones, 104, of Minerva and East Rochester, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, surrounded by her family, including her son, Tim Miller, and caregiver Tonya Fry, who cared for her during the past three years.

She was born Jan. 3, 1922, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Harry and H.R. (Rutledge) Kiehl.

She married Robert Blaine Miller, and they had four children, Elizabeth Abigail, John Jay, Thomas Kiehl and Timothy. Robert preceded her in death in 1986. She later married Jesse Jones in 1992.

Harriet was a 1940 graduate of McKinley High School and a 1943 graduate of Aultman Hospital School of Nursing, earning her registered nurse degree. She served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a first lieutenant with the Army Medical Corps, 52nd General Hospital, Wolverley Camp, Kidderminster, England, where she helped establish a hospital in preparation for D-Day. She cared for hundreds of soldiers injured in battle.

She was discharged in 1946 and received the European Theater of Operations Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal and 20 service bars.

After the war, she returned to Canton and married Robert. The couple lived in Santa Barbara, California, for four years before returning to Ohio, where they purchased a small farm in West Township. She worked at Aultman Hospital as a pediatric nurse from 1970 to 1987 while continuing her community service through organizations including the Red Cross, Don V. Cross American Legion Post 357, Minerva Area RNs and the Minerva Community Meals program, which she helped found in 1976.

She was deeply dedicated to the meals program, serving as a cook during the 1980s and later as driver coordinator beginning in 1994. She continued her involvement until her early 90s, when she developed macular degeneration and was no longer able to serve.

Harriet was honored as Minerva’s Person of the Year in 2012 and was also recognized by the Great Trail DAR during the Osnaburg Quilt and Art Fibers Guild Honors Night at the Foltz Community Center.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Miller; her second husband, Jesse Jones; her daughter, Elizabeth; and her son, Thomas.

She is survived by two sons, John Miller (Wendy) and Timothy Miller; three stepchildren, Cathy Witherspoon (Charles), Laurie Toalston and James Jones; five grandchildren, Megan, Angela, Jason, Christopher and Ashley; nine great-grandchildren, Dexter, Willow, Rowan, Michael, Tessa, Frank, Ian, Jacob and Samuel; and two great-great-grandchildren, Leo and Lucy.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 16, at noon at Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva, with the Rev. Peggy Garner officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow at Moultrie Chapel Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held one hour prior to services, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the funeral home.
