Merv Hershberger

Merven D. Hershberger, 84, of Shreve, passed away at his home on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, after a period of declining health.

Merv was born on New Year’s Day 1941 in Holmes county to the late Eli E. and Sarah (Mullet) Hershberger. He married Mickie McGrady on October 14, 1966, she survives; they had been married 59 years.

Merv learned the value of hard work early in life while working on his family farm, which set the foundation for his future endeavors. He began his professional career there before taking a position with Walter Jones Construction, where he was responsible for hauling heavy equipment.

He later moved on to work at Shreve Mobil, driving the wrecker, and subsequently opened the Parts Store in Shreve. In time, Merv established his own business, Merv’s Trucking.

During the period when he operated the wrecker and managed the parts store, Merv also dedicated himself to public service as a member of the Clinton Township Fire Department, ultimately serving as Chief. Additionally, he was an active member of the Shreve Businessmen, contributing to the local business community.

Mickie and Merv were passionate about bluegrass music, frequently organizing shindigs at their farm that brought them immense happiness. Merv always considered bluegrass his “therapy.” He enjoyed hosting his Coffee Club for 25 years, which was a true blessing in his life. Renowned for his storytelling talent, he had a gift for putting people at ease. He was a loyal friend and always took time to help others along their journey.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his nieces and nephews, Marty (Janet), Marcella (Don), Kathy (Gary), Gayle (Gary), Robert, Arthur (Lynn), Richard (Susan), Thomas Hershberger, and Michael (Sarah), Casey McGrady.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Willard & Dean, and his nephew Douglas Hershberger.
