Garaway track and field athletes advance to state track meet
Pirates advance out of Austintown and Chillicothe regionals
Garaway had three individuals and one relay team qualify for the Division IV boys track and field state tournament out of the Austintown Regional, which took place May 27 and 29 at Austintown Fitch High School.
Jacob Roudebush finished second in the pole vault with a vault of 13 feet while Micah Yoder finished second in the long jump with a jump of 21-3¾. Andrew Wickers finished third in the 100 meters in 11.09. The 4x800 relay team of Bryce Johnson, Carter Travis, Dominic Schlabach and Nic Palmer also qualified with a fifth-place finish in 8:16.79.
Girls track and field
Garaway’s Abby Steiner qualified for the Div. V state tournament by finishing third in the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet at the Chillicothe Regional, which took place May 28 and 30 at Southeastern High School.
Softball
Garaway’s season came to an end with a 5-0 loss to West Jefferson in a Div. VI regional final May 29.
True Tango doubled to tie the school single-season record with 15 doubles. She finished the season with school records in batting average (.600) and on-base percentage (.644).
The Pirates closed the season 26-6, one win shy of the program record.
Garaway picked up a 3-1 win over Lucasville Valley in a regional semifinal May 28.
Nadia Pope slashed a two-run single to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Kyleigh LaCroix hit her seventh home run of the season in the fifth to make the score 3-0. LaCroix’s homer was Garaway’s 42nd of the season, a school record.
Audrey Miller struck out six over 5 1/3 innings while Annabelle King struck out three in relief.
