Garaway softball repeats as district champion
Pirates advance to regional semifinals with 4-0 win
The Garaway softball team won its second straight district championship, beating Crooksville 4-0 in a Division VI district final May 21.
Kayla Miller led Garaway with two hits. She also threw out a runner trying to steal and made a pair of diving catches.
Annabelle King earned the win in the circle, improving to 16-2 after throwing five shutout innings. Audrey Miller recorded her first save of the season with two perfect innings.
Garaway broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when Kyleigh LaCroix scored on an errant throw. The Pirates added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Krista Miller had a single and a sacrifice fly; LaCroix singled, walked, scored and drove in a run; and True Tango added an RBI single. Keaton Yoder singled and scored while Molly Miller scored as a courtesy runner.
Boys track and field
Garaway had five top four finishes at the Div. IV Newcomerstown District, led by runner-up efforts from Jacob Roudebush, Micah Yoder and the 4x800 relay team.
Roudebush placed second in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, while Yoder was second in the long jump at 21-1½. The 4x800 team of Bryce Johnson, Carter Travis, Dominic Schlabach and Nic Palmer also finished second, crossing in 8:27.83.
Andrew Wicker added a third-place finish in the 100 meters, clocking 11.17 seconds. Garaway’s 4x100 relay team of Seth Schie, Braylon Books, Yoder and Wicker placed fourth in 45.09.
The top four finishers in each event qualified for regionals.
Girls track and field
Garaway had three top four finishes at the Div. V Newcomerstown District, led by Abby Steiner’s championship in the pole vault.
Steiner won the pole vault by clearing 11 feet, 4 inches. Quinn Schwartz added a third-place finish in the discus with a throw of 110-9, and Alexa Jones placed third in the 100 meters in 13.02 seconds.
The top four finishers in each event qualified for regionals.
