West Holmes track teams rack up regional berths
Knights advance in relays, field events and distance races
The West Holmes boys track and field team had seven top four finishes at the Division III St. Clairsville District, led by Maddax Graham’s wins in both throwing events.
Graham won the shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 5½ inches and added a discus title with a throw of 159-2. Rhett Chaney placed second in the long jump at 20-11¾, and Marshall Yoder finished fourth in the 300 hurdles in 42.88 seconds.
The Knights also had three relays place in the top four. The 4x200 relay team of Chaney, Garrett Obrst, Yoder and Malachi Craft finished second in 1:32.60. The 4x100 team of Chaney, Obrst, Cody Gallion and Craft placed fourth in 45.02 while the 4x800 relay team of Parker Garver, Cole Troyer, Owen Mallasch and Jimmy Wengerd also finished fourth in 8:48.51.
The top four finishers in each event qualified for regionals.
Girls track and field
West Holmes had seven top four finishes at the Div. III St. Clairsville District, led by its distance runners and relay teams.
Katherine Kaster finished second in the 1600 in 5:16.95 and placed third in the 3200 in 11:40.08. Iriel Mena placed third in the 800 meters in 2:21.20, and Breslyn Brown followed in fourth in 2:24.47.
The 4x800 relay team of Kaster, Brown, Sophie Arnold and Mena finished second in 9:56.70 while the 4x400 relay team of Brown, Alizah Sigler, Mena and Kaster placed third in 4:13.94.
In the field events, Mallory Marmet placed third in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 11½ inches and fourth in the discus at 115 feet.
The top four finishers in each event qualified for regionals.
Softball
West Holmes’ season came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Harrison Central in a Div. IV district final May 21.
The Knights eked out a 7-6 win over Meadowbrook in a district semifinal May 18.
