West Holmes track teams compete at OCC Championships

Girls finish fifth behind Marmet’s big night; boys take seventh behind Graham

West Holmes senior Katherine Kaster set a new PR in the 1600 at the recent Ohio Cardinal Conference meet.

The West Holmes girls track and field team finished fifth at the Ohio Cardinal Conference Championships May 15 at Ashland University.

Mallory Marmet highlighted the evening with a strong throwing performance, winning the discus with a personal-best throw of 125-9 and finishing runner-up in the shot put at 34-2¼. The junior totaled 18 points, tying Dover’s Maddie Minnis to share OCC Field Event Athlete of the Meet honors.

Katherine Kaster set a personal best of 5:12.22 to finish third and anchored the 4x800 relay team of Iriel Mena, Breslyn Brown and Sophie Arnold to a runner-up finish. Mena finished third in the 3200 in an outdoor season-best time. The 4x400 relay team of Brown, Alizah Sigler, Chelsie Cooper and Kaster finished fourth. Brown also placed sixth in the 400, and Arnold finished fifth in the 3200. McKaylin Getchey placed seventh in the high jump.

Boys track and field

West Holmes finished seventh at the OCC Championships May 15 at Ashland University.

Maddax Graham led the way in the field events, winning the discus title with a throw of 159-10 while placing fifth in the shot put with a throw of 50-2, scoring 14 points overall to finish second in the OCC top field events scorer category.

Mac Craft posted two personal bests in the sprints, finishing fourth in the 200 in 23.00 and fifth in the 100 in 11.29. Craft also anchored the 4x100 relay team that included Rhett Chaney, Garrett Obrst and Cody Gallion to a season-best time of 44.68, good for fifth place. He also anchored the 4x200 relay team of Chaney, Obrst and Marshall Yoder to a time of 1:32.84, tying its season best. Chaney cleared the 21-foot mark for the first time in the long jump, placing fifth with a personal-best jump of 21-2. Jimmy Wengerd finished eighth in the 800.
