Marjorie Johnson

Marjorie Ilene Johnson, 103, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 5, 2025, in her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born Sept. 17, 1922, in Fox Township, Carroll County, she was the daughter of the late Durward and Clara Cummings Newbold.

A 1940 graduate of Carrollton High School, Marjorie was honored as salutatorian of her class. Though she was offered a scholarship to attend college, she chose instead to marry the love of her life and begin the family that would forever remain her greatest joy.

Marjorie’s first job was at Ashton’s 5 and 10. During World War II, she proudly served on the home front as a Rosie the Riveter while working at Berger’s in Canton. Throughout her life, she continued to serve her community through her work at the office of Attorney Saltsman and Saltsman, the Carroll County Auditor’s Office under Dick Walton and the Carroll County Treasurer’s Office under John Yeager.

She found her greatest happiness with her hands in her flower beds; with a book—especially her Bible; working crossword puzzles; or enjoying a friendly game of Rummikub. Her unconditional love for her husband and family was evident to all who knew her and earned her deep respect and admiration throughout the community.

A devoted member of the Salineville Church of Christ, Marjorie taught Sunday School for many years. Her love for her Lord, Jesus Christ, was undeniable. Her remarkable knowledge of Scripture and her eagerness to share and discuss God’s Word made a lasting impact on countless lives.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Merel Johnson; infant daughter, Susie; daughters, Cathy Johnson and Sandra Steele; her parents; her brother, Carl Newbold; her sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Paul Wright; and her grandson, Kevin Steele.

She is survived by her son, Thomas (Cindy) Johnson; daughters, Debbie (Patrick) Wright and Jennifer Host (William Grubbs); and her special sister-in-law, Delores Newbold. Marjorie leaves behind 11 grandchildren: Shelley (David) Bowman, Kelley (David) Nolan, Michael Steele (Andrea Czech), Brian (Erin) Steele, Shannon (Troy) Crosslan, Chad (Christina) Montgomery, Melissa Lambert, Thomas G. Johnson (Lonna Lucas), Shawn (Allison) Wright, Kyle (Cody) Doud and Kory Host (Hannah Norton); 17 great-grandchildren: Ryan, Ashley and Sarah Bowman, Patrick (Taylor) Finnegin, Stevie (Lyle) Chan, Alishia (Seth) Cameron, Karlee and Mike Steele, Jack Steele, Blake Montgomery, Madison (Marcus) Nenichka, Adam Lambert, Gabe Miller, Jordan and Maddox Wright, Emery Grubbs and Kohen Host; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to her beloved caretakers—Debbie Smyth, Lisa Elliott, Bonnie Stich and Connie Marshall—and to the entire hospice team, whose kindness and care were a tremendous blessing. Special thanks are also offered to the Meals on Wheels team for their faithful service and compassion.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. at Dodds Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held the same day from 10 to 11 a.m.

Burial will follow in Mechanicstown Cemetery.

Marjorie’s life was a testament to faith, devotion and love. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew her.
