Carrollton holds Memorial Day parade, service
The parade was led by six members of VFW and American Legion Post 428
More than 50 units took part in Carrollton’s annual Memorial Day parade Monday, and a strong turnout followed for the memorial service at Westview Cemetery.
The parade was led by six members of VFW and American Legion Post 428, followed by several VFW Auxiliary members, the Carrollton High School Band under the direction of band directors Dave and Becky Dickerhoof, and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
Also taking part were the VFW float carrying several veterans, juvenile and adult marching units, horses and riders, and numerous athletic teams, including baseball, softball and other sports teams.
Several area car dealerships participated in the parade, along with tractors and antique units, including “Ole Betsy,” the 1931 former Fox Township Volunteer Fire Department truck now owned and driven by Ron Dennis and his wife, Joanne.

James “Jim” Newbold, quartermaster of Veterans of Foreign Wars Fighting McCook Post 3301, served as master of ceremonies at the cemetery service, where Pastor Tim Cashen gave the invocation and benediction.
The National Anthem was led by Kailey Macke, a 2006 graduate of Carrollton High School. The Carrollton High School Band also performed two selections under the direction of Dickerhoof.
Carroll County Commissioner Robert “Bob” Wirkner was the guest speaker. He titled his speech “Remember and Reflect,” noting, “Honoring the fallen heroes who preserved this nation is a reverent responsibility that I undertake with humility.”
Wreaths were placed at the Veterans Memorial by Army veteran Herb Wade and U.S. Navy veteran Lee Kimble.
Wreaths also were placed at the smaller veterans memorial by Tammy Newbold and her daughter, Tammy Newbold.
The ceremony concluded with a three-gun salute provided by a firing squad made up of VFW and American Legion members, followed by taps played by Carrollton High School Band members Isabella Nuzzolillo and Joshua Hoosler.
The public address system at the cemetery was provided by Ray Newbold of Mechanicstown.
