Walter Tipton

Walter James Tipton, 98, of Shreve, passed away peacefully at Danbury Senior Living, Millersburg on November 21, 2025. He was born in Glenmont on September 30, 1927, to the late Harry L. and Eva A. (Croskey) Tipton and graduated from Big Prairie High School in 1945. 

Walter then honorably served his country in the Army during WWII. He was stationed in Japan during the occupation from February of 1946 through June of 1947 and served as a clerk in the headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Upon returning home, he purchased his farm where he lived until just this past May when his health no longer permitted. 

He married Ella Sue Patterson on February 22, 1953. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2010, they had been married 57 years.

Walter was a lifelong member of the Ripley Church of Christ and a member of the Shreve American Legion Post #67. 

He is survived by his son Norman (Gretchen) Tipton of Shreve; son-in-law, Randy Berry of Wooster; 2 step-grandchildren, Joseph Berry and Nicole (Jeb) Beeman, and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Maurice; his daughter, Sue Ann Berry; four brothers, Howard, Marcus, Clarence, and Albert Tipton; and his sister, Erma Morris.

The family received friends on Monday, November 24, from 4-7 p.m. at Ripley Church of Christ and one hour prior to the funeral service, which was held on Tuesday, November 25 at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Tom Benter and Pastor Jeremiah Stivers officiated. He was laid to rest in Ripley Cemetery with military honors presented by the Shreve American Legion post #67.
