Thomas McMillen Jr.

Tom McMillen

Thomas “Mac” Porter McMillen Jr., of Shreve, Ohio, devoted husband to Shirley and proud father of four daughters, passed away peacefully at his home on December 12, 2025.

Born in September 29, 1943, in Wooster, Ohio, to the late Thomas Porter McMillen Sr. and Melba Quinsue (Bagwell) McMillen, Tom married his high school sweetheart, Shirley (Spreng), on August 23, 1963, beginning a rich and adventurous life together.

Tom graduated from Big Prairie Lakeville High School in 1961 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Ashland College. His lifelong love of learning led him to complete a summer institute grant at Duke University, followed by a Master of Science degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

He devoted 30 years to education, including 25 years teaching chemistry and physics at West Holmes High School. A recipient of the Acker Outstanding Teaching Award, Tom led the science club to numerous state and national science fairs, inspiring students with enthusiasm, encouragement, and a passion for discovery.

Outside the classroom, Tom enjoyed cards, golf, and cheering for the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, and Ohio State Buckeyes. An entrepreneur at heart, he was active in 4-H, refereed basketball, worked as an insurance agent, owned Sunny Slopes General Store, and opened the teen dance center The Barracks.

In retirement, Tom founded McMillen Tours, organizing and escorting over 400 motor coach tours to sporting events, live performances, and historic destinations.

Above all, Tom cherished his family, especially his daughters and grandchildren, and will be remembered for his boundless heart, humor, and gift for turning strangers into friends.

Tom is survived by his wife Shirley; daughters Christine (Don) Geiser, Melissa (Rob Shaw) McMillen, Beth (Sean) Starr, and Catherine (Richard Gill) McMillen; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his brother Jeffrey McMillen and his parents Thomas and Melba (Bagwell) McMillen.
