Hugo R. Gingrich, age 93 of Orrville, died Aug. 3, 2018, at Brenn-Field Nursing Center in Orrville.

The son of Joseph and Beatrice (Smith) Gingrich, Hugo was born on July 28, 1925, in Masontown, Pennsylvania. He was united in marriage to Lois M. Shane on June 16, 1950, in Sterling, Ohio. She preceded him in death on Feb. 23, 2016.

Hugo graduated from Allentown High School in Pennsylvania and from William Jennings Bryan University in Dayton, Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in Bible study. While in college he sang in a gospel quartet and played the trumpet.

Hugo served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a medic on the USS Mercy, caring for wounded GIs. He had been employed as a truck driver for Smith Dairy in Orrville for 37 years.

Hugo was a longtime member of Grace Brethren Church in Sterling and previously sang in the choir at Grace Brethren Church in Wooster. He was an avid reader and spent countless hours reading in the “Western” section of the Orrville Public Library.

Hugo is survived by daughters, Peggy (Dan) Marsh of Jacksonville, North Carolina and Patty (Gary) Carr of Marshallville; sons, Ron (Karen) Gingrich of Lodi and Rich (Tracy) Gingrich of Wooster; grandchildren, James (Leigh) Marsh, Jodie (Thurman) Ramsey, Nicole Gingrich, Kendra Gingrich, Jeff (Stacy) Carr and Jason (Julie) Carr; great-grandchildren, Daniel and Brandon Marsh, Hannah, Haley and Grayson Carr, and Thurman “Tucker” Ramsey; brother, Paul (Dee) Gingrich of Smithville; and a sister, Doris Beichler of Rittman.

In addition to his wife, Hugo was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Michael Carr; and sisters, Gladys Rowser and Miriam Gingrich.

In keeping with Hugo’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral service. Cremation will take place, and a family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
