Robert Garbrandt, 89, of Uhrichsville passed away at his home Sunday, July 6, 2014.Born July 2, 1925 near Dennison, he was a son of the late James and Mary (Riley) Garbrandt.After graduating from Dennison High School in 1943, Bob proudly served his country in the Army during World War II, having been stationed on Okinawa. He earned three Bronze Stars before being transported back to the United States on a hospital ship near the end of the war. Upon returning home from the war, he worked for a number of area businesses before settling into his long career as a coal miner, eventually retiring from Y & O Coal. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and spending time in nature. He was a founding member of the Hey Jack Sportsman’s Club, and was a former member of the Uhrichsville Moose and Eagles, and the Dennison Eagles.On July 2, 1948, he married the love of his life, the former Virginia “Ginny” Crites with whom he enjoyed more than 61 years of loving marriage until her passing Sept. 18, 2009.He is survived by three children, Thomas (Sandi) Garbrandt of Newport, Michael Garbrandt of Midvale and Lori Lynn Kadri of Uhrichsville; grandchildren, Hannah, Brittney, Nathan, Marisa, Marce, Toby, Taina and Erica; and many great-grandchildren, including Jace and Kane to whom he was especially close; sisters, Mildred and Joann; and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Eric Garbrandt; sister, Eileen; and brothers, Carl, Lewis and Leroy.In keeping with Bob’s wishes, he has been cremated without a public visitation or service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hey Jack Sportsman’s Club.
