A model bridge was used for Dancing on the Bridge in Malvern during the replacement of the bridge over Sandy Creek on North Reed Street in Malvern in 2005.

First-day enrollment figures for the 1965-66 school year in Carrollton Exempted Village Schools and the three county schools (Augusta, Perry at Perrysville and East Local) totaled 3,844, which included 2,734 in CEVSD and 1,110 in county schools. 

Robert W. Johnson began his duties as Carroll County treasurer, succeeding Mrs. Robert (Lois) Frampton. 

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Baker purchased Butler’s Store on Public Square in Carrollton from Mr. and Mrs. Brooks Manfull, who had operated the store for the past five years. 

Members of the Carrollton High School football coaching staff included Head Coach Don McBride; assistant coaches Ron Hornbeck, Robert Bird, Jules Damiani and Richard Manfull; and freshman coach James (Rusty) Bright. 

50 YEARS AGO

New permanent postage rates increased to 10 cents for a first-class letter. 

Carrollton Exempted Village School District reported a first-day enrollment of 3,340 students, including 2,263 in elementary and 1,077 in high school — an increase of 75 students. 

An 11-year-old Carroll County boy, Steve Lumley, won first place in the intermediate calf class of the 4-H junior fair show at the 1975 Ohio State Fair. 

Carrollton’s cross country team, coached by Craig Winters, edged Class AAA power Dover 29-30 in the season opener at Dover. 

40 YEARS AGO

After two months without a service director, Minerva Village Council named Donald E. Moss to the post. 

Jim DeFeo, a Carrollton High School senior, was named a semifinalist in the 1986 Merit Scholarship competition and also achieved an outstanding ranking of 76th in the state among the 31,000 students who took the 1985 National High School Math Test. 

The Carrollton-United Local football game finally ended in the fourth quarter with a 1-0 win by the Warriors. 

30 YEARS AGO

The Carrollton High School Marching Band performed to a crowd of Canadian and American music lovers at Hamilton’s Tiger-Cats stadium in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, during halftime of the game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Toronto Argonauts. 

Daryl Spahr, a Carrollton-area resident and local McDonald’s employee, was pictured holding a 19-pound cantaloupe he grew in his garden. 

Minerva quarterback Kevin Kirkpatrick got the Lions on the board in the first quarter with an 8-yard run, and they never trailed en route to a 27-7 win over Orange High School.

Forty-one members of Malvern’s Boy Scout Troop 155 who attained the rank of Eagle Scout were honored at the troop’s 100th Eagle Scout Family Night and Court of Honor held at Little Country Church fellowship hall near Waynesburg. The group was pictured with longtime Scoutmaster John Campbell. 

Running back David Alexander scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead the Malvern Hornets in a come-from-behind 34-21 win over the Southern Local Indians as Malvern returned to Friday night games under the lights.

The Free Press Standard turned 184 years old Sept. 8, 2015, having been established in 1831 as The Centreville Recorder. 

Carroll County 4-H Club members Zach Oboy, Kady Davis, Allison Davis and Travis Johnson were pictured with their projects and trophies won at the 2015 Ohio State Fair. 

Despite wet weather conditions, the Carrollton Warriors defeated the Edison Wildcats 35-0.
