Maurice E. Mullet, M.D.
Maurice E. Mullet, M.D., 76, of Berlin passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014 at the OSU Medical Center, Ross Heart Hospital, Columbus.He was born Dec. 17, 1937 in Holmes County, and was the son of Roy A. and Alta (Kandel) Mullet. He married Phyllis Shrock and she survives. He attended Goshen College for four years and was a graduate of the Ohio State School of Medicine. He had a family practice in Berlin from 1963 to 1987, he was the Holmes County Health Commissioner from 1975 to 2005 and served as the Knox County Health Commissioner for a short time. Maurice served as president of the Association of Ohio Health Commissioners from 1982 to 1983, served on the Joel Pomerene Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees from 1966 to 1981, and served as president of the National Association of County Health Officials from 1992 to 1994. He was a member of Berlin Mennonite Church, the East Holmes Lions Club where he was a past District Governor and received two Melvin Jones Fellow awards and was a member of the Presidents Club of OSU. Maurice received the Public Health Life Member award, OSU College of Medicine Alumni Achievement Award and the Alumni Service Award, the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007, and numerous awards from Hiland High School and the Ohio High School Athletic Association. He was a member of the Association of Ohio Health Commissioners. He was always helping and feeding sports teams and neighbors. He was known for his cooking, generosity and serving youth.Surviving in addition to his wife, Phyllis, are three children, Kevin (Juliet) Mullet of Reno, Nev., Vonda (Mark) Benson of Thorntown, Ind., and Brett Mullet of Dublin; five grandchildren, Jasper Mullet, Mackenzie Benson Thada, Joel Benson, Logan Benson, and Joshua Benson; sisters, Juanita (Junior) Miller of Benton, Betty Lou (Dick) Clark of Dover; a brother, Marlin Mullet of Steamboat Springs, Colo. and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Wynn.Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at Berlin Mennonite Church, with Beau Hummel officiating. Burial was at the Berlin Cemetery. Friends called from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, handled the arrangements.
