Cheryl Louise Backstrom, age 83, died in the early morning hours on Tuesday, April 30, 2019.

Cheryl was born in Akron on April 5, 1936, to Fannie Lizzie (Mitcham) and Clayton O. Huff. She grew up with her beloved younger sister, Suzanne, in that legendary house on Firestone Boulevard. She was a member of the Garfield High class of 1953 and earned a BA in education from Wittenberg University in 1957. She was a teacher in the Orrville City school system from 1957 to her retirement in 1993, earning a master’s degree from Ashland University in 1992.

Never letting a minute go to waste, Cheryl traveled the world during her retirement, visiting several European countries, Egypt and all over North America. She was a Life Master in Bridge and taught classes in Orrville at Heartland Point. She loved musical theater, reading and watching Orrville basketball games.

Cheryl was preceded in death her parents; brothers-in-law, Mo Tipton and Jarvis Cotton; and countless missed friends.

Cheryl is survived by her sister, Suzanne Tipton of Orrville; daughters, Lynne (Larry) Wagner of Orrville and Denise (Jim Fitzgerald) Backstrom of Wellfleet, Massachusetts; a son, David Backstrom (Deborah Mayo) of Ashland; granddaughters, Allison Wagner of Waverly, Suzanne Wagner of Wooster, and Libby and Caris Wagner of Orrville; sisters-in-law, Dr. Velma Saire of Sewickley, Pennsylvania and Shirley Cotton of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss her dearly.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on May 17 at Schmidt Hall, 501 Hall St., Orrville, from 5-8 p.m.

A family interment of ashes will take place at the Crown Hill Cemetery mausoleum prior to the celebration.
