In loving memory of Glen A. Best who passed away on October 23, 2023, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Glen worked at several jobs during his life including Hilcrest Dairy, Y + O Mining, Hopedale Mining, and retired from ODOT several years ago. Glen was a dedicated worker at his public jobs, but his true love was farming. He loved working the land and livestock. Glen had many different types of livestock in his lifetime— chickens, pigs, goats, horses, and sheep. He showed his sheep at county fairs all over Ohio. In his later years Glen had beef cattle.
Glen always considered his day off as Monday—reserved for the Carrollton Livestock Auction. He had a front row seat and was always given a red flag to help direct cattle out of the ring. That seat will be difficult to fill. Glen often bought the “skinny cows” at the auction. He’d refer to them as “poor babies” and nurse them back to health. Glen rescued many animals including his beloved donkey, Jenny, who still lives at the farm. When his barn cat, Clyde, brought Miss Priss and six kittens’ home, Glen paid for each to be neutered and spayed. They became a part of his barn. He often joked that he was the only farmer in Harrison County who has as many cats as cows. Glen’s favorite rescue was his house cat, Punk. She was his loving companion for 13 years. She was AKA— “the kid.”
Glen lived by “To each his own.” Glen was greatly loved by many people. He will be greatly missed by many people.
