Scio council approves alley paving by 3-2 vote despite concerns over priorities

The alley near the recently demolished building at the red light on East Main Street, next to Koch’s Funeral Home, will be paved after a narrow vote by Scio Village Council.

Council member Dough Whiteman pushed the issue, telling fellow members that without paving, “it’s just going to look like crap.” He quickly made a motion to approve the project.

When Council member Jeanne Altavilla was assured that funds were available, she seconded the motion. The measure passed 3-2, with Kari Salsberry and Jamie Sabol opposed.

“There’s more roads in Scio that needs attention besides an alley way,” Salsberry said after the meeting.

The paving cost is estimated at $8,360.

Before the vote, Village Administrator Jason Tubaugh delivered his report. He said work continues on the reclamation project on East Elm Street for a residential property, though rain has delayed progress. Completion is expected by the end of the month or early October.

“But it’s going well,” Tubaugh said.

He also updated council on the wastewater sanitation project for Hilltop Drive, noting cost estimates and plans have been finalized. The project is projected at $1,276,720, with Tucson as the contractor.

Tubaugh said the village has ordered 75 tons of salt for the coming winter season, bringing the total stock to 145 tons. Delivery is expected in the second week of October.

“Hopefully that’s enough, knock on wood,” he told council.
