Huskies top Morgan in sectional opener

Harrison Central entered the contest as the No. 4 seed with a 15-8 record

The Huskies played host to the Morgan Raiders May 12 in OHSAA Division IV sectional tournament action on Harrison Central’s home field.

Harrison Central entered the contest as the No. 4 seed with a 15-8 record. Morgan, the No. 11 seed, brought a 7-14 record to the matchup. The Huskies advanced to the second round following a 5-2 win over the Raiders.

Carrollton, the No. 6 seed, will be the next opponent for the Huskies. The Warriors will travel to Cadiz May 18.

Central opened the scoring with a run in the third inning when Kamryn Campbell was awarded first base on a walk. Courtesy runner Jaiden Pelegreen replaced Campbell at first and was sacrificed to second by Emma Jarvis. Mikayla Pelegreen hit a line-drive double to left field, scoring her cousin Jaiden.

The Huskies added another run in the fifth inning with one out. Bailey Smith reached on an error. Courtesy runner Emma Palmer replaced Smith at first. Palmer advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jarvis sliced a single to right field, scoring Palmer.

The Raiders tied the score in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs with two outs.

Harrison retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Kara Blackburn singled with one out. Denali Stull followed with a single to center, sending Blackburn to third. Kam Crothers reached base on an error, allowing Blackburn to score and Stull to advance to third. Crothers stole second. Lillian Thomas singled to center field, scoring Stull and Crothers, resulting in the 5-2 final.

Harrison outhit Morgan 5-4. The Huskies played flawless defense with no errors. Morgan was charged with three errors. Mikayla Pelegreen recorded the only extra-base hit for Harrison Central. Thomas drove in two runs. Pelegreen recorded the win, striking out nine and allowing two walks.

To stay sharp, the Lady Huskies picked up games against Martins Ferry and Claymont.
