Deersville theater to present ‘Fiddler on the Roof’

A story of why a family and their friends are forced to leave their home for unknown lands

Bobby Zinsmeister as Tevye, left, and Nicole Heavilin as Golde rehearse a scene for the upcoming June production of "Fiddler on the Roof" at the Deersville Community Theatre.

Deersville Community Theatre will bring the musical classic “Fiddler on the Roof” to its stage this summer for four performances, including a matinee as the final show.

Performances will be held at 7 p.m. June 18-20 and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 21.

The story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman who lives in the tiny village of Anatevka. Tevye and his wife, Golde, are parents to five daughters. A lively and opinionated community of tight-knit Jewish friends and neighbors helps Tevye as he tries to protect his daughters and instill traditional values of their faith amid changing social morals and growing antisemitism in Czarist Russia.

“Rich in both historical and ethnic detail, the universal theme of tradition reaches across the barriers of race, class, nationality and religion in ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’” Director Marsha Dodds said. “Audiences will experience a wide range of emotions as the actors bring Tevye, his family, friends, neighbors and foes to life on the historic stage of the Deersville Theatre.”

Musical Director Kay Sedgmer said the audience will sing the familiar tunes long after leaving the theater.

“Songs such as ‘Sunrise, Sunset’ and ‘If I Were a Rich Man’ are but a few of the tunes this talented cast will sing during the show,” Sedgmer said. “You don't want to miss the talent on the stage for this performance.”

Choreographer Callie Anderson has the cast ready to share dances full of laughter, love, pain and tradition as they tell the story of why the family and their friends are forced to leave their home for unknown lands.

Meals will be served two hours before each performance. A menu for the free-will offering dinner will be available soon on the Deersville Community Theatre Facebook page. A link for ticket purchases also will be available there.

Deersville Community Theatre is located at 208 Main St., Deersville.
