Custer Memorial observance to feature Little Bighorn presentation
A noted Civil War arms historian will speak on the Battle of the Little Bighorn in observance of the 150th anniversary of the battle

This year’s Custer Memorial Association observance June 6 will feature Phil Spaugy, a noted Civil War arms historian, who will speak on the Battle of the Little Bighorn in observance of the 150th anniversary of the battle.
His presentation is titled “Little Bighorn Campaign and Battle.” Spaugy has co-led several immersive Little Bighorn campaign tours with Gettysburg and Custer historian James Hessler.

Phil Spaugy
Spaugy has been a member of the North-South Skirmish Association since 1978 and has fired nearly every type of American Civil War firearm. His primary research focuses on the arms and accouterments of Federal infantry soldiers, particularly those from his home state of Ohio. He also has a special interest in the Iron Brigade of the Army of the Potomac.
A retired general aviation services company owner, Spaugy lives in Vandalia with his wife, Amy. He serves as senior editor for Military Images magazine, arms columnist for The Civil War Monitor and historical consultant to Gettysburg History and Civil War News magazine.
The day will begin at 11 a.m. with music provided by J.T. Thompson of Scio at the monument, with members of Scio American Legion Post 482 posting the colors. General Custer, portrayed by Rick Williams, and master of ceremonies Leroy VanHorne will welcome guests and introduce honored guests.
Civil War artillery and infantry reenactors will be on hand to explain their weapons and equipment and conduct a small skirmish on the monument grounds featuring Dr. Mandal Haas of Carrollton and his Civil War cannon. General Custer also will give a briefing on cavalry weapons of the period.
Guests will have time to enjoy lunch at New Rumley Global Methodist Church and visit the Custer Museum and Center.
Steve and Lisa Ball will return this year to perform songs of the Civil War period, along with historical information about the songs, in the church sanctuary.

The day’s events will conclude with remarks from General Custer. There also may be an auction of Custer-related items if time permits.
The museum and gift shop will open at 10 a.m. and remain open after the presentations to give guests an opportunity for viewing or purchases.
The monument is located at state Route 646, New Rumley.
