Dr. Mandal Haas appointed medical director for Carroll County General Health District

Longtime Carrollton physician and U.S. Army veteran to focus on prevention, wellness and community health initiatives.

Dr. Mandal Haas

The Carroll County General Health District has appointed Dr. Mandal Haas as its new medical director. A respected physician and long-standing community member, Haas brings nearly three decades of medical experience, leadership and public service to the role.

Born and raised in Carrollton, Haas has dedicated his life to serving the community through compassionate care, military service and civic leadership. After beginning his studies in electrical engineering at the University of Akron, he discovered his passion for medicine while volunteering as an ambulance driver with a local emergency squad. That experience led him to become an EMT, a paramedic and, ultimately, a physician. He earned his medical degree from Wright State University’s School of Medicine in 1991.

Following medical school, Haas completed a three-year family medicine residency at Aultman Hospital and has practiced full time in Carrollton for the past 28 years. His deep community roots and commitment to local care have earned him wide respect among peers and residents.

Haas also has a distinguished record of military service. He joined the Ohio Army National Guard in 1984 and was later commissioned into the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1991. During his service, he trained at military hospitals worldwide and served a tour in Iraq in 2004, where he was entrusted with the daily medical care of Saddam Hussein. He retired as a lieutenant colonel that same year.

In addition to his medical and military experience, Haas has served as the elected Carroll County coroner since 2004, a position he continues to hold.

As medical director, Haas plans to focus on reducing preventable deaths and promoting long-term wellness across Carroll County. His goals include encouraging physical fitness and reducing obesity, raising awareness about distracted and impaired driving, addressing substance use, promoting gun safety education and improving suicide and drowning prevention efforts.

The Carroll County General Health District said Haas’s leadership and lifelong commitment to the community will strengthen efforts to advance public health in the region.
