Carrollton High time capsule from 1955 opened at school board meeting
Copper box revealed Bible, newspapers, football program and school records; contents to be displayed in CHS cafeteria commons.
A time capsule placed in the cornerstone of the Carrollton High School building in 1955 was opened at the Tuesday, Sept. 9, meeting of the Carrollton Board of Education.
The capsule was opened by Carrollton Schools Superintendent David Davis with the assistance of board member Steven Pridemore.
According to Davis, the copper capsule weighed 5.4 pounds and measured 12 inches wide, 7 inches tall and 4 inches deep.
The well-preserved contents included:
— A copy of the Bible
— A copy of the Carroll Journal of Nov. 17, 1954
— A copy of The Free Press Standard of Nov. 17, 1955
— A copy of the school program, including a list of the teachers and school board
— A copy of the homecoming football program with autographs of all the players
— A copy of the program of the cornerstone-laying ceremonies, including a list of all participants and officers of Carroll Lodge
— A list of the contractors of the building
The contents, along with the copper time capsule, will be placed in a showcase in the high school cafeteria commons area, according to school officials.
