Carrollton golf, cross country shine as Warriors hit season midpoint

Golfers tied atop EBC ahead of tourney; cross country posts top-three finishes while soccer, volleyball and football teams battle through busy week.

Boys Golf

The Warriors defeated Marlington 178-195 at Carroll Meadows as Michael Mullen posted a 41 to lead all golfers. Nevan Woods shot a 45 while Parker Roudebush and Nathan Sutton each carded rounds of 46 as Carrollton keeps pace with Minerva atop the EBC standing, setting up a winner-take-all scenario at the upcoming EBC tournament.

Girls soccer

First for Carrollton was a Sept. 8 visit to Sandy Valley where the Warriors took advantage of Chelsea Pesta’s monster game to roll to a 5-1 win. Pesta, who finished with four goals on the day, found the net twice in the opening six minutes to stake Carrollton to an early lead.

Reagan Schneiders scored for the Warriors early in the second half on a Pesta assist as Carrollton stretched its lead to 3-0 before the Cardinals finally cracked the scoreboard. Pesta added two more insurance goals to provide the match’s final score.

Reid Macke picked up two assists while Isabella Nuzzolillo and Gianna James each had one. James also had six saves for Carrollton.

After a day off, the Warriors hosted Alliance for an EBC match, and the visiting Aviators scored three second-half goalsin the 3-0 shutout.

James recorded 13 saves for Carrollton as Alliance (2-4-2, 1-0-1) enjoyed a 15-6 advantage in shots on goal. With the loss, the Warriors slipped to 0-2-1 in the conference.

Carrollton concluded its week Sept. 13 at Coshocton, which scored first. The Warriors quickly responded, but every time, the Redskins scored to move back in front. Then, with Carrollton trailing 3-2 and 19 minutes remaining in the match, Isabella Nuzzolillo nailed a corner kick for the tying score.

Nuzzolillo then scored her second goal five minutes later on an assist by Maria Nuzzolillo. The goal, which gave Carrollton its first lead of the match at 4-3, proved to be the game winner.

Pesta scored the Warriors’ other two goals, while James collected 13 saves for Carrollton (3-3-1).

Cross Country

Carrollton competed at the Fairless Night of Champions XC Invitational Sept. 13, and the Warriors did very well as the girls placed second overall and the boys placed third.

Leading the girls was Gabi McCort (22:34.4), who placed fifth. She was followed by Ella Barkan (10th), Olivia McCort (11th), Heather Allbritain (15th), and Norah Kerr-Jung (16th).

Carrollton’s boys were paced by senior John Childs (18:31.9), who finished in ninth place. Carson Murphy (14th), Andrew Childs (16th), Andrew Husk (17th, and Landyn Wade-Perkins (19th) also contributed to the Warriors’ stellar finish.

Volleyball

The Warriors went 0-3 last week, beginning with a Sept. 8 match against Louisville in which the Leopards swept Carrollton 3-0 (25-13, 29-27, 25-16)

Carrollton was led by Emma Shafer who compiled 12 assists, nine points, and two aces. Juliaunna Miller had 22 digs and Kamryn Shaw collected eight kills.

Carrollton then traveled to EBC archrival Minerva the next day and, despite the Warriors taking two of the first three sets, the Lions won in five (20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 16-14).

Carrollton then took a day off and, remaining in the EBC, made the sojourn to Marlingtonon September 11 to take on the first-place Dukes. The Warriors gave Marlington all they could handle but the Dukes won 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17).

Miller led the Warriors defensively with 23 digs, while Beadnell dished out 12 assists. Erin Shafer led Carrollton (4-8, 2-4) with 12 points and three aces.

Boys Soccer

The Warriors’ week began with a Sept. 9 match at EBC foe Alliance. The Aviators jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead en route to a 5-0 shutout. Rylan Barack and Brian Welch recorded seven and six saves, respectively, in the loss.

The Warriors again suffered first half woes in a non-conference match against Union Local, falling behind 2-0. Carrollton’s attack came alive in the second half but the Warriors could not overcome the deficit, falling to the Jets, 4-2.

Paycen Haven scored both goals for Carrollton (1-8, 0-2), while Barack registered nine saves and Duval Citro had one.

Football

The Warriors evened their record at 2-2 by slipping past visiting Howland 16-10.

Levi Kiko carried the rushing load again for Carrollton, with 29 carries for 142 yards and a short touchdown plunge. Hunter Allison added 213 yards passing, including a long scoring pass up the left sideline to Jaden Murphy for the other CHS touchdown. Murphy had eight catches for 139 yards.

Carrollton reaches the midway point of the regular season Friday night when Akron Garfield (1-3) comes to town to wrap up the Warriors' non-conference schedule.
