Scouts from Buckeye Council, Scouting America, collected more than 1,500 fully stocked backpacks this summer through the inaugural Backpack to School service project. The bags will be delivered to elementary schools across the region to help students start the year prepared and confident.
Scouts were challenged to pack an extra bag to bring to summer camp to help others be prepared. Each donated backpack includes essential supplies such as notebooks, pencils, folders and crayons.
“Each backpack represents an individual Scout who took initiative and answered the call to help,” Buckeye Council CEO Nathan Hopper said. “We are proud to continue serving our communities and partnering with schools to impact the lives of young people.”
To reward their efforts, each Scout who donated a backpack received a Super Slushie Cup, good for free refills all week at camp. More than 13,000 slushies were enjoyed over seven weeks at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation in Carroll County.
The Backpack to School campaign was supported by Scouts, families and community members throughout the council’s footprint, with special thanks to sponsors Artemis Awards & Apparel, Consumers National Bank, Bob and Linda Sebo and the Mastroianni Family Foundation.
With the school year underway, Buckeye Council is inviting families to attend a Join Scout Night at their local school this fall to learn more about Scouting and how to get involved.
