Fifth-grade students at Strasburg Elementary led a Veterans Day celebration to honor all who have served. The annual event was held Nov. 11 in the middle school gym, which was decorated in red, white and blue with handmade placemats and table favors created by the students.
Members of the Strasburg American Legion Charles Hofer Post 522 presented the colors at the start of the ceremony and retrieved them at the end. Each branch of the military was recognized, and every veteran in attendance received a gift.
Students from kindergarten through fifth grade attended the celebration. The National Anthem was played, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by fifth-grade students. The program also featured the playing of taps, musical selections by the elementary choir, and a breakfast for veterans and guests.
The event included door prizes, a reading of a Veterans Day poem, and a singalong of "Proud to Be an American." A slideshow featuring photos of veterans from the community was also shown.
“These special people, our veterans, have protected our freedom and way of life because of their dedication and courage so that we can live safely and peacefully,” said fifth grader Jude McGaffick.
“Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11. Do you know why that is? On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, World War I ended,” said Ava Espenchied.
“The day was originally called Armistice Day to celebrate peace. However, after World War II and the Korean War, it was renamed Veterans Day to honor all Americans who have served,” said Lily Malterer.
“Every year the elementary takes the time to learn about Veterans Day and the sacrifices you have made. We are honored to remember the friends and family members of our school community who have so valiantly protected our freedom through their service in the American Armed Forces,” said C. J. Edwards.
“Veterans come from all walks of life — our neighbors, teachers and friends,” said Ashtyn Gilkerson. “They serve and protect our country’s values, a service that never truly ends.”
Fifth-grade participants included Jude McGaffick, Nikko Chewning, Ava Espenchied, Lucas Wiles, Ashtyn Gilkerson, Aria Albright, Mila Boggs, Lily Malterer, John Indorf and C. J. Edwards.
The event was organized by Jessica Barkley, intervention specialist at Strasburg Elementary.
