Tuscarawas County Sports Hall of Fame to induct Class of 2026
The Tuscarawas County Sports Hall of Fame will induct its Class of 2026 June 20 at Buckeye Career Center
The Tuscarawas County Sports Hall of Fame will induct its Class of 2026 June 20 during a 6 p.m. ceremony at Buckeye Career Center.
Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at the Dover Public Library or online at eventbrite.com.
The Class of 2026 includes the following honorees.
Claymont: Clyde Arnold (deceased), a 1958 Uhrichsville High School graduate who lettered in basketball, track and field, and football; later attended Duquesne University, played basketball and was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the seventh round. Andrew “Andy” Pentecost (deceased), a 1985 Claymont High School graduate and four-year letter winner in track and field; a two-time Division II state champion in the discus and an All-American as a senior. Richard Ronald, a 1990 Claymont High School graduate who lettered in cross country and track and field; state champion in cross country in 1989 and state champion in the 1,600 meters in track and field; All-Ohio in cross country in 1988 and 1989.
Garaway: Lloyd Crilow, a 1974 Garaway High School graduate and three-year letter winner in track and field; the 1974 state champion in the shot put and Garaway’s first state champion. Tim Immel, a 1970 Garaway High School graduate and head coach for the Garaway boys and girls golf teams; led the boys to the Division III state championship in 2004, the first state title at Garaway; also coached the girls to fourth-place finishes at state in 1988 and 1994. Susan Mueller Troyer, a 1984 Garaway High School graduate and four-year letter winner in girls basketball and track and field; Garaway’s all-time leading scorer with 1,792 points; named Eastern District player of the year and first-team All-Ohio by The Associated Press.
New Philadelphia: The 1915 New Philadelphia boys track team, coached by George Pierce and assisted by Jesse Barnhart; won the mile relay and remains the school’s only state champion in track and field, competing before class divisions. The 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 New Philadelphia cross country teams, coached by Jerry Dawson and Dean Kreinbihl; each team went undefeated in the regular season, won two Cardinal Conference titles and two Federal League titles; Dawson was named 1985 Eastern District AAA coach of the year. Tom Farbizo, a 1963 New Philadelphia High School graduate who lettered in football, baseball and track and field; was senior football tri-captain and most valuable lineman; played college football for Woody Hayes at Ohio State; served on the Ohio High School State Board of Directors from 2007-09 and was inducted into the inaugural class of the New Philadelphia Athletic Hall of Fame.
Tuscarawas Valley: The 1972 Tuscarawas Valley football team, coached by Larry Foltz; the first Tuscarawas County football team selected for the OHSAA football championship games, representing Class A-Region 11. The Harold C. and Marjory Q. Rosenberry Foundation, established in 1994 by Harold C. Rosenberry and Marjory Q. Rosenberry; has awarded more than $9 million to Tuscarawas County recipients, including $409,782.75 in grants in 2025.
Dover: Ray Mears (deceased), a 1944 graduate who coached men’s basketball at Wittenberg University to a 121-23 record and later led Tennessee for 15 seasons with a 278-112 record, including seven 20-win seasons; a member of nine halls of fame. George Elford (deceased) and the Dover Basketeers, a Globetrotter-style team coached by Elford from 1955-63; 24 boys in grades six through eight showcased their talents and entertained crowds across the United States. Adam Donehue, a 1997 graduate and 14-time letterman in football, wrestling and baseball who wrestled at Ohio State.
Indian Valley: Terry Deems, a 1955 Tuscarawas High School graduate and Wittenberg University record holder for career rebounds, free throws attempted and free throws made; started 84 games and was a 1959 AP Little All-American. The 1976 Indian Valley South boys basketball state champions, who went 25-1; eight of the 12 players also were on the 1975 state runner-up team, and four played in the state tournament all four years. Larry Huggins, a 1979 Indian Valley South graduate and four-year letterman in basketball and track; a two-time All-Ohioan, the 1979 Class A Ohio player of the year and a four-year player at Ohio State.
Newcomerstown: The 1929 Newcomerstown High School state baseball championship team, the only state title team in school history. Brenda Williams McIntire, a 1981 graduate and four-year starter in three sports who earned 12 letters and became the school’s first female All-Ohioan. Jamie Welch Paul, a 2001 graduate who holds school records in the 100, 200 and 400, as well as the 4x100 and 4x200 relays; a three-time Eastern District Division III track athlete of the year; qualified for state in 14 events and earned All-Ohio in three. Jeffery McIntire Jr., a 2004 graduate who won Inter-Valley Conference titles in the shot put and discus in 2003 and 2004; a four-time All-Ohioan in football and an All-Ohioan in wrestling and track in 2004.
Strasburg: Dr. Carol Weinmann (deceased), a 1960 graduate and 1959 state champion in the shot put and baseball throw; later was head volleyball coach at Cal State Fullerton and published in 17 athletics-related journals. Tyler Dreher, a 2002 graduate and two-time first-team All-Ohio selection in football, once each on offense and defense; a two-time Eastern District player of the year who holds school season and career scoring records. Travis Dreher, a 2004 graduate and two-time first-team All-Ohio selection in football, plus one second-team selection; holds the school record with 12 career home runs in baseball.
Tuscarawas Central Catholic: Paul Drotovick (deceased), longtime Dennison St. Mary’s football and basketball coach who led a 33-game football winning streak from 1957-60 and finished with a 61-30-3 football record and a 124-72 mark in basketball. The 1975 boys state championship golf team, coached by Brad Cook, with team members Art DeCrane, Bob Ren, Mark Starinieri, Jim Tarulli and Mark Tomasina. John Colombo, a 1979 graduate and second-team All-Ohio selection in basketball; was John Carroll University’s team MVP four consecutive years, ranks second on the school’s all-time scoring list, and is a John Carroll Hall of Fame inductee; was drafted in the seventh round by the NBA.
