Minerva school board approves $319K turf project for high school stadium

Board also updates policies, approves personnel moves, and highlights upcoming events

Minerva High School’s stadium is scheduled to get new turf. 

An agreement with Maumee Bay Turf Center of Oregon, Ohio, was approved at the Sept. 15 meeting of the Minerva Local Board of Education. 

The contract was approved at a cost of $319,516 and is to be completed within 10 to 14 days of the starting date of Nov. 3. 

A telemedicine agreement with the Carroll County Board of Health was approved at no cost. 

Other administrative recommendations approved by the board included: 

— Attendance of Kyle Lucas and vocational agricultural students at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Oct. 20–Nov. 1. 

— Disposal of a 2005 school bus to be scrapped with more than 226,000 miles. 

— Approval of the Minerva High School handbook updates and Sunday extracurricular participation of the following groups: MMS and MHS cheerleading events; MHS girls golf state tournament Oct. 12; MMS cross country at Dublin Jerome High School Oct. 19; MHS girls wrestling at Lutheran West, Dec. 28, and Olentangy Orange, Jan. 11. 

In other personnel items, the board: 

— Approved maternity leaves for Cheyenne Heath, Kaila Bigler and Dustie Kubankin. 

— Approved the following supplemental hires and tutors at Minerva Middle School: Heather Frigyes, Jennah Karmazin and Heidi Troy, all technology leads; Christine Foutz, Academic Challenge; Nicole Chaddock, district leadership team. 

— Approved the following before- and after-school tutors: Lisa Burman, Jeri Cook and Brian Mahaffey, all Minerva High School; Chelsea Oberly, English as a second language tutor; Pam Stoller, MHS; Sean Kocher, Brian Costea, Laura Bauman, Maggie Masl and Maddie Foutz, all MMS. 

— Approved amended certificates of resources of $26,660,764 and permanent appropriations totaling $29,075,648. 

Superintendent Mark Scott gave an administrative update. He congratulated the treasurer and her team on earning the Ohio Auditor of State Award. He also thanked Scott Cassidy, curriculum director, for his report on the Ohio State Report Card. Scott noted that a Patriot’s Day assembly was held Sept. 11 and said both athletics and fine arts programs were off to an excellent start. 

Scott added that parents and students had responded well to the school’s cell phone policy. He also noted that Minerva Middle School and elementary students participated in the Playmakers program along with MHS varsity football at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 

Upcoming events included the homecoming game Sept. 26, the Minerva Athletic Hall of Fame Oct. 4, and Scott’s attendance at the Buckeye Association of School Administrators conference Oct. 6–7. 

— Set the next board meeting for Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at the administration building.
