The spirit of community partnership is on full display as students from Minerva High School’s Home Maintenance class have completed a real-world construction project for the Village of Minerva. Under the direction of instructor Matthew Leatherberry, the class designed and built a new, durable stand to support the village’s communication board at the local park.
The project began when village officials approached the high school with a request for a new stand. Students embraced the opportunity, turning it into a valuable hands-on learning experience, according to Minerva School Superintendent Mark Scott.
Collaborative design and real-world skills
After reviewing the village’s needs, students worked together to:
— Create a custom design
— Develop a complete materials list
— Construct a long-lasting structure using vinyl components
“This project was a great example of how schools and communities can work together for mutual benefit,” Leatherberry said. “Students gained real-world construction experience, and the village received a functional, long-lasting addition to their park.”
The project allowed students to practice planning, fabrication, problem-solving and teamwork — essential skills emphasized within the Home Maintenance curriculum.
Scott said village officials were highly appreciative of the partnership and praised the students’ craftsmanship and professionalism.
“This collaborative effort highlights Minerva High School’s continued commitment to engaging students in meaningful, service-oriented projects that strengthen community ties and provide authentic, practical learning experiences outside the classroom,” he said.
