A longtime dream of a Mechanicstown-area couple, Ed and Martha Snode, became a reality with the opening of High Hopes Ski Area on County Road 12, a half-mile northeast of Harlem Springs. 

The Rev. Boyd J. Yorke, 95, pastor emeritus of Carrollton First Presbyterian Church, died. 

For the first time in 11 seasons, the Carrollton High cagers defeated Springfield Local 69-64 on the Flying Tigers’ home court. 

50 YEARS AGO

The two candidates for Carrollton High School’s winter sports queen were Betty Cogan and Deb Manfull, both seniors at CHS. 

Martin Owen Knight was elected president of Leesville Village Council and acting mayor. 

Final payment of $2,200.54 was made by the Carrollton Jaycees on a $5,000 loan executed with The Cummings Bank Co. to help finance a tennis court project costing $8,900 at the Carroll County Veterans Park. 

Carrollton heavyweight wrestler Jamie Reed won the top weight-class championship at Carrollton’s 10th annual mat invitational meet. 

40 YEARS AGO

Beth McCort and Geoff Warner reigned as queen and king at Carrollton High School’s 1986 winter sports homecoming. 

Dellroy Council accepted the resignation of clerk-treasurer Nancy McCartney, and Donna Carter was appointed successor. 

The Warriors boys basketball team took sole possession of the Senate League lead after trouncing Tuslaw 86-62 at Carrollton’s homecoming game. 

30 YEARS AGO

Carrollton attorney John Campbell and his wife, Melanie, were featured in a front-page picture and story promoting Valentine’s Day. 

New Harrisburg Presbyterian Church pastor James Kocsis was honored upon his retirement from the active ministry after 33 years of service. 

Minerva Schools Superintendent Michael Gallina received a new five-year contract with a 2% raise, bringing his salary to $66,666. 

Carrollton senior Susie Kampfer was pictured going to the basket during a game with Akron Springfield, which the latter won 36-28. 

20 YEARS AGO

Ornella Orocca and Danny Myers were crowned the 2006 winter homecoming queen and king at Malvern High School. 

Karl Schumacher was re-elected president of the Carroll County Board of Developmental Disabilities. 

Inducted into the Southern Local Athletic Hall of Fame were Marlene Green Corbisello, Albert “Cracker” Brammer, Bob Carter, Jeremy Athey and Sarah Francis.

Malvern High School junior Jaret Majestic put on a season-high 35-point performance during a 77-59 win over the Ridgewood Generals and scored 29 points against Strasburg during a 53-44 win 10 years ago.

Maygen Bales and Luke Lesley, both seniors, were crowned Carrollton High School’s 2016 winter homecoming queen and king during the Carrollton-Alliance boys basketball game. 

Beth (Zollars) Tonsky was re-elected president of the Carrollton Schools Alumni Foundation. 

Malvern High School junior Jaret Majestic topped scoring with a 35-point performance, including eight 3-point shots, during the Hornets’ 77-59 win over Ridgewood, and he scored 29 points against Strasburg in their 53-44 win.
