Carrollton rolls at Todd Kalivoda Classic
Wrestlers place at holiday tournament
Once Carrollton got in the zone, there was no stopping the Warriors’ good cheer as they rolled to a resounding 66-18 dismantling of Richmond Edison at the Todd Kalivoda Classic, hosted by Toronto High School Dec. 27-28.
Over their last two games, Carrollton has outscored its opponents 133-53. The Warriors would have made an unrepentant Scrooge proud as they were miserly on defense against the overmatched Wildcats, limiting them to a paltry 4 points in each of the first three quarters of play.
Meanwhile, Carrollton’s offense operated with all the efficiency of a North Pole toy factory as four of five Warriors starters finished in double digits. The Warriors racked up 42 points in the first half to lead by a whopping 34 points as the game headed to intermission, and were led by Tayvian Johnson and the game’s Most Valuable Player Hunter Allison, who each scored 13 points.
Isaac Husted chipped in 10 points and Jayven Johnson impersonated a Swiss Army knife as he scored 11 points, grabbed 10 boards, dished six assists and came up with five steals. Carrollton (5-2), by the way, held a 36-11 edge in rebounding against the Wildcats (3-6), who were paced by Timothy Degarmo’s 6 points.
Wrestling
Hoover High School hosted the 65th North Canton Holiday Wrestling Tournament Dec. 19-20, a showcase featuring 54 squads. The Warriors took part and placed 16th overall with 85.0 points. Louisville was the overall team champion with 214 points, comfortably ahead of Ashland’s 175.0 and Lake Catholic’s 172.0
Four Warriors made the podium, led by Ja’Wayne Richardson at 157 lbs. and Jayden Sutton at 150. Both wrestlers placed fifth as Richardson notched an 8-1 decision over Louisville’s Lucas Neff and Sutton won 8-3 against Sloan McGhee of Clear Fork.
Also placing for Carrollton was John Childs (138), who dropped a close 6-4 decision to Danny Waite Jr. of New Lexington to finish sixth. Sawyer Broadwater placed eighth at 106 after a narrow 5-3 loss to Wheeling Park’s Hunter Flanegin.
Girls Basketball
The Lady Warriors were in action right before Christmas as they made the trip to Steubenville Dec. 23 to take on the Big Red, a team ranked seventh in the state in Div. III. Steubenville (9-0) played up to its billing, knocking off Carrollton (6-4) 69-44. No other details have been made available.
