Carrollton churches combine for 1995 Public Square nativity scene

From a shared Public Square nativity in 1995 to decades of civic, agricultural and athletic highlights across Carroll County

60 YEARS AGO 

From 1965 FPS Files 

Officers were elected to the Carroll County Community Improvement Corporation, formed for the sole purpose of advancing, encouraging and promoting the industrial, economic, commercial and civic development of a community or area within Carroll County. 

C. H. “Cy” Butler, a native of Carrollton and national president of the Hot Stove League, died at age 69. 

The Carrollton High School wrestling team opened the 1965–66 season with two match wins over the Springfield Local Tigers 44–5 and the East Liverpool team 20–17. 

50 YEARS AGO 

From 1975 FPS Files 

The top 10 corn producers in the Carroll County Corn Club were recognized by County Agriculture Extension Agent Roger Amos. They included Roger Oyer, who was named the 1975 corn production champion for harvesting 150.45 bushels per acre, and Carl Noble, who had the highest net return per acre at $241.81. 

The New Harrisburg Presbyterian Church’s 31-member Chancel Choir, directed by Eileen Fryberger, was presenting the “Christ Is Born” cantata. 

Joyce Hannon was installed as president of the Carrollton Garden Club. 

A fourth-quarter “pressure” gave the Carrollton cagers a 48–37 win over Claymont. 

40 YEARS AGO 

From 1985 FPS Files 

A hat was used by Raymond Roof, chairman of the Carroll County Board of Elections, to settle a three-way tie for two seats on the Lee Township Board of Trustees. Dick Walters and Donald J. Yeager drew the lowest numbers — 1 and 2 — and were declared the winners. Jerome A. Evans drew No. 3, ending the tie. All three candidates received 126 votes in the Nov. 5 general election.

A Sherrodsville couple, Paul and Trudy Boring, were the subjects of a feature story in the Dec. 19, 1985 issue of The FPS for keeping the true spirit of Christmas by collecting toys and gifts throughout the year to help Santa by giving to those in need. 

Carrollton’s boys cage team took the Minerva Lions “by the tail” and “signed the Sandy Valley Cardinals’ tail feathers” by posting 65–60 and 89–64 wins, respectively. 

30 YEARS AGO

Members of Trinity Lutheran and First Presbyterian churches in Carrollton joined together to form a live six-person nativity scene on Carrollton Public Square. 

A groundbreaking was held by members of the Carroll County Humane Society for the group’s animal shelter on Antigua Road SW, Carrollton. 

Mrs. Helen Best of Carrollton was honored with three resolutions and a commendation at a dinner for her service on the Carroll County Republican Central and Executive Committee. 

The Carrollton Lady Warriors scored their fourth straight Northern Buckeye Conference win by defeating the Northwest girls 42–38. 

20 YEARS AGO

A knitting group began at Bell-Herron Middle School when teacher Patty Wey brought in a knitting project to show Jo Ann Walker, a fellow teacher. 

With the assistance of Lions Roar Pizza, Judy Hays and Marie Kinkade, two employees of GBS Filing Systems of Malvern, raised $1,160 for United Way. 

The Bell-Herron basketball team, coached by Lanny Peterson, got off to a 2–0 season start with a close 37–36 win over visiting Minerva and a 49–18 victory over host Northwest.

Jeff Hothem, a Carroll County resident and driver of a fully loaded pulling tractor, was named the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League Puller of the Year during the 10th annual banquet in Indianapolis, Ind. 

The Carrollton Board of Education received architect plans for a new Carrollton school complex for grades 9–12. 

The Minerva Lions girls basketball team picked up a pair of wins by defeating East Canton 52–31 and Marlington 50–28.
