TuscLands hosts inaugural youth pheasant hunt in Tuscarawas County
The two-day First Flight Pheasant Hunt combined hunter safety education, hands-on training and field experience to inspire the next generation of conservationists.
TuscLands recently held its first First Flight Pheasant Hunt for Tuscarawas County youth, an event funded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and hosted by Bullseye Pheasant and Duck Hunting of Uhrichsville.
The two-day event began with a daylong hunter safety course led by ODNR officials, where participants learned about firearm safety, ethical hunting practices and conservation laws. Those who completed the course earned the ODNR Hunter Safety Certification.
On the second day, participants received hands-on firearms training from Shepherd Training Solutions of Dennison before putting their new skills into practice. They first shot clay pigeons, then participated in a live pheasant hunt, successfully bagging 30 of the 50 birds released by Bullseye. The event concluded with a meal of pheasant pot pie. Despite challenging weather, participants and mentors reported a great experience.
“Activities like this are important to introduce young people to the outdoors, especially those who might not otherwise have the opportunity,” TuscLands representatives said. “Instilling a passion for nature helps create a new generation of conservationists who will preserve Tuscarawas County’s open spaces for years to come.”
TuscLands is committed to implementing economic development projects that celebrate the county’s rural beauty and outdoor traditions. The organization plans to expand next year’s event by engaging more local vendors and community partners.
TuscLands’ mission is to promote and preserve Tuscarawas County farms and greenspace — for everyone, forever. To learn more, donate or volunteer for future events, visit tusclands.org or contact info@tusclands.org.
