Nearly everyone knows someone affected by cancer, but the mention of pancreatic cancer often brings a heavy sigh. One of the deadliest forms of cancer, it offers few screening options and is often diagnosed in its advanced stages, leaving families with little to rely on but hope, faith and memories of their loved ones.
Local resident Pam Dummermuth, along with friends and family, knows that feeling all too well. To honor her late sister, Paula Perticarini, who died of pancreatic cancer in August 2023, they have created an endowed scholarship in her memory. The effort is supported through the Pugga's Flowers Pop-up Amaryllis Sale, named in tribute to Paula’s childhood nickname, “Pugga.”
“Selling flowers seemed to be the right thing to do,” said Patricia Thomas, another of Paula’s sisters. “We graced Paula with every kind of flower you can think of between diagnosis and death.”
The Pop-up Amaryllis Sale will take place Saturday, Nov. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at OV Harvest, which is also hosting an open house. Owner Kimberley Adams has graciously donated space for the one-day event. All proceeds from the sale will go directly to the scholarship fund.
Throughout the year, the sisters collect vintage, salvaged and unique vessels to plant the bulbs in. “They make great gifts and are fun to care for and watch grow,” Thomas said. Amaryllis bulbs typically take four to six weeks to grow and bloom after planting.
As part of the open house, OV Harvest will offer specials on olive oils and vinegars, prewrapped gifts and refreshments. The event offers a perfect opportunity to shop for holiday cooking supplies while purchasing a meaningful, living gift that honors Paula’s memory and supports local students.
OV Harvest is located at 106 Second St. SW, New Philadelphia
