New Philadelphia parent, teacher urges support for Issue 1

Many surrounding districts have moved to campus style schools, which provide many benefits for students, teachers and families

Today I am writing this letter as a concerned parent of four in the New Philadelphia City School District as well as a current teacher at New Philadelphia High School.

My husband and I are not from New Philadelphia, however we were both working here and decided to buy a home and raise our family here because we liked the close-knit community and small town feel.

Both of my roles as local teacher and mother give me a unique perspective inside and out of the classroom as to just how concerning the situation is regarding the current facilities in our school system.

I see firsthand many issues and shortcomings that our aging facilities have in addition to serious health and safety concerns. I believe these concerns will be resolved with replacing our current facilities, which will unlock $80 million in state co-funding. This allows our community’s investment to go even further since the state would invest our tax dollars back into our community instead of somewhere else in the state.

Our community has one chance this May to strengthen the future stability of our community by approving Issue 1. When approved, all of our preschool to 12th grade students will be able to advance their education in two safe and modern school buildings on one campus.

Many surrounding districts have moved to campus style schools, which provide many benefits for students, teachers and families. Resources for all students will be easily accessible on one campus, which ensures that kids get what they need in a timely manner. Additionally, there will be room for designated pick up and drop off areas and plenty of parking so that families have an all round better experience every school day and for special events.

This is the opportunity that our community needs to show up for the next generation just like everyone who came before us did. Strong schools mean a strong community and if we want New Philadelphia to continue to thrive and grow even stronger, we must support our schools. I encourage you to get the facts from trusted sources when making this decision. Please get out and vote yes on Issue 1 to support our students, schools, teachers and our beautiful community.
